An environmental impact assessment of the Belarusian nuclear power plant published by the country’s ministry of energy has recommended that the plant be sited at the Ostrovets site in Grodno oblast, western Belarus, 23km from the Lithuanian border.
It was favoured over two other sites in Krasnaya Polyana and Kukshinovo for geological reasons.
The ministry is planning to build two 1200MWe units of the Russian VVER AES-2006 nuclear power plant with evaporative cooling towers. The first unit is expected to begin operation in 2016, the second two years later.
