The Belarus government has found a way to use the surplus energy produced by the Belarus NPP, currently under construction at Ostravets, with the assistance of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom. Neighbouring Baltic states have refused to purchase energy from the plant. However, the Council of Ministers is amending plans for the development of the electric power industry up to 2025 in order to increase the consumption of electricity. First, new manufacturing facilities will be constructed and existing ones modernised. For example, Amkodor, a leading company for the production of special purpose machinery, will invest almost BYN421 million ($207m) in the creation of new plant by 2022. This will increase energy consumption by 26.6 GWh a year. In addition, Minsk Tractor Works will invest BYN26 million in modernisation projects by 2025, boosting power consumption by 39GWh.
Second, sections of the railway will be electrified, for example, the Zhlobin-Kalinkovichi line, increasing electricity consumption by 150GWh a year. This will require BYN420 million, including BYN143.5 million from budgetary funds. Third, road lighting will be increased pushing up consumption by 4.51GWh a year funded by BYN127 million from the budget. Fourth. There will be large-scale modernisation in the sphere of housing and communal services at a cost of BYN14.2 million. Overall, the plan will require more than BYN7.7bn, including BYN335 million from the budget. The increase in consumption will amount to over 1.6TWh a year.
