Atomstroyexport and Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania (NEK) have signed an agreement to stop new civil works and the manufacturing of new equipment for the Belene nuclear power project in Bulgaria. Works have been stopped untilat least the end of June 2011, after the agreement was signed last month.
Over the next three months the two companies will perform a detailed analysis of nuclear and radiation safety issues and will review the external impacts on the sustainability and the operational safety of the Belene NPP units.
The companies also said that they would endeavour to ensure the project will comply with any new International, European or Bulgarian safety related requirements.
