Designs have been drawn up for Russia’s first regional facility for radwaste disposal, which will cost $80 million to construct. The head of MinAtom’s board on ecology and decommissioning of nuclear facilities, Victor Akhunov, said the facility would take several years to complete. It would initially take waste from the northern fleet nuclear submarines.

The facility is to be built on Novaya Zemlya. However, specialists also intend to consider an alternative option for the location of the site, on the Kola peninsula.

The project is undergoing international examination. The ministry is looking for a source of finance.
