British Nuclear Group’s specialist contracting business, Project Services, has been awarded a new contract from the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to manage its security enhancement programme at nuclear sites in Russia and the Former Soviet Union (FSU).
The work, which runs until 2012, forms a major component of the UK’s £32.5 million ($59 million) annual contribution to the G8 Global Partnership to address the nuclear legacies of the Former Soviet Union and will provide a major income stream for Project Services.
Initial projects under the contract will focus on improving physical protection and security at a nuclear site in Moscow and two further sites in Obninsk, approximately 200 km south west of Moscow.
The contract announcement comes as local media reports that Sergey Kiriyenko head of the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency is drawing up a new programme for nuclear and radiation safety with 10 times the budget of previous years. Kiriyenko reportedly said the programme, which will cover the next 15-20 years, will be ready by September 2006.
