Plans for enriching uranium by Brazil have been stalled by budgetary and scheduling glitches, according to reports from the country.
The Resende uranium enrichment facility in the southeastern state of Rio de Janeiro had been due to commence operations to supply fuel for Brazil’s Angra plants but the proposed 2006 budget falls considerably short of the $15.2 million required to operate the facility annually.
According to media reports, government sources also acknowledged that the inauguration could come at an “inopportune” time given the Iranian crisis.
The country has significant uranium reserves, but currently sources its fuel from overseas manufacturers.
