The European Parliament has pushed for Denmark to take belated care of victims of a 1968 crash of a nuclear-armed American B52 bomber in Greenland, causing cancers and other health problems.
Americans, Danes and Greenlanders cooperated in cleaning up the debris, but while US government monitored its personnel’s health, Copenhagen did not monitor its citizens, noted the parliament. MEPs claimed that although Denmark was not then a signatory to the European Union’s Euratom treaty, its duty-of-care rules apply now.
