A Nuclear Waste Task Force formed by South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges is expected to suggest the state considers a low-level radioactive waste disposal compact with Connecticut and New Jersey, to reduce its role as the busiest burial site for LLW in the US.
In 1995, South Carolina pulled out of the Southeast Compact because neighbouring North Carolina failed to meet its obligation to move toward licensing a burial site to succeed the existing one at Barnwell, SC. Barnwell has continued to accept LLW from around the country, but Hodges wants to reduce its role – a move that would force generators to store their waste on site. The only other operating site in the US is at Hanford, which accepts LLW waste only from other states in the Pacific Northwest.
