The Hinkley Point A ILW PCF is a vital element of the site’s decommissioning programmeCavendish Nuclear announced it has been awarded a contract worth nearly £3 million to help provide Magnox’s Hinkley Point A site in Somerset with capability to immobilise intermediate level waste (ILW) and encapsulate it for safe long-term storage

The contract awarded is the ILW Preconditioning Facility (PCF) Lot 7, which is scheduled for completion over an 18-month period.

The preconditioning facility will form part of a wider waste management process, which will provide Magnox with the capability to safely immobilise and encapsulate the ILW that is currently stored in various locations on the site.

“The preconditioning facility is a vital element of our decommissioning programme and will allow us to pacify ILW before it is either sent for further processing or sent directly to the site interim storage facility, until a national repository becomes available,” noted Paul Winkle, Magnox chief operating officer.

Cavendish Nuclear will act as principal contractor under the Construction Design and Management Regulations (2015) and will lead the installation, setting to work and inactive commissioning for the project, according to a statement.

“We are pleased to bring added value and our learning from experience to this project through re-deployment of the team that has successfully been delivering projects for Magnox at their Berkeley site over the last 10 years,” said Gary Ward director of Cavendish Nuclear’s Business Unit.

The company is already working at Hinkely Point A on the PCF lot 3 and the dry vault fuel element debris (FED) retrievals projects.
