Cavendish Nuclear has secured a contract to design and build a plant for treating liquid wastes from the decommissioning of the Hinkley Point A nuclear plant in the UK.

Cavendish will supply Magnox Ltd with a plant capable of processing a various waste streams and converting them to a form that is safe for storage or disposal.

It is the first time that Cavendish has supplied equipment for the cleanup of Hinkley Point A. The liquid waste treatment facility will provide de-watering facilities that create two waste streams – sludge that can be mixed with cement to create solid intermediate-level waste, and an effluent that is suitable for further treatment and discharge to the sea.

The modular plant is due to be built and commissioned off-site at Cavendish Nuclear’s facility at Whetstone, Leicestershire and installed at the Hinkley Point A site in early 2020.
