China’s State Council has given the green light for the development of the first nuclear project using Hualong One (ACP1000) technology.

The approval was given in a State Council executive meeting on April 15, presided over by Premier Li Keqiang.

Hualong One has been developed by China National Nuclear Corporation and China General Nuclear Power Group. The first project, which is destined for construction in Fujian province, must meet the highest international safety standards, the State Council said.

The reactor has a combination of active and passive safety systems, including double reactor containment and multiple redundant safety systems, CNNC said. It will use 177 nuclear fuel assemblies.

A panel of experts completed review of the Hualong One design in August 2014, and China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) approved construction of the two unit pilot project, Fuqing 5&6, in November 2014.
