Shenyang, China, claims that it may become the first nuclear-heated city in the world when an on-going nuclear-powered heating project is completed.

The city will raise $170 million to build two low- temperature 200MW nuclear reactors developed by Qinghua University. Located in northeast China’s Liaoning province, Shenyang has an average temperature of 11.5 °C below zero in winter. The total heating area will be 10 million m2, taking up one seventh of the city’s heating area.
