The UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has officially come into existence and has taken possession of the 20 sites slated for nuclear decommissioning. The authority is responsible for an estimated £48 billion (€32.4 billion) of costs for the decommissioning process, which may take more than 100 years to complete.
Sir Anthony Cleaver, chairman of the NDA, is now responsible for the activities previously covered by the UKAEA and BNFL, which will continue to operate the sites as incumbent contractors for two years.
By 2008, the NDA must put the clean-up of half the sites out to competitive tender but will not impose any penalties on contractors if they fail to deliver, instead relying on incentives to ensure timely completion.
