Russia’s Kalinin 4 nuclear power plant officially started commercial operation on 25 September 2012.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark the occasion, Rosatom director general, Sergey Kirienko said project was proof that the Russian vendor could build on time and within budget.
“Unit 4 has become the proof of [the] feasibility of building a power unit nearly from the scratch, within preset timeframe and, moreover, with a sizable saving of RUB7 Billion.” he said. Savings of RUB 7 billion ($225 million) amount to ten percent of the overall project cost.
Kalinin 4, a VVER-1000 reactor design, is located in Udomlya, Tver Region, 350 km northwest of Moscow at Russia’s only operating inland commercial nuclear power station. The unit was first connected to the grid in November 2011.
