Chairman of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) Andrej Stritar said 13 May that the organization’s members had reached just ‘a fair degree of agreement’ on the content and modalities of the European ‘stress tests.’
In broad terms, ENSREG agreed that the assessments will cover extraordinary triggering events like earthquakes and floods and the consequences of any other initiating events (e.g. transport accidents, such as airplane crashes) potentially leading to multiple loss of safety functions requiring severe accident management. ENSREG also proposed to establish a process in order to address risks due to security threats that are not part of ENSREG’s mandate.
Stritar said he remained confident that ENSREG would reach the consensus in the following few days. The organization plans to present its proposals for the safety assessments to the European Council on 10 June.
