First concrete has been poured for the second unit at Fangjiashan, according to reports by the Xinhua news agency.

Two domestic CPR-1000 reactors are planned for the site, close to the existing Qinshan nuclear power plant. Construction began on the first unit in December last year.The two reactors are due to start commercial operation in 2013 and 2014. The total cost of the two-unit Fangjiashan plant is estimated to be around CNY26 billion ($3.8 billion).

Mainland China has 11 nuclear power reactors in commercial operation, 14 under construction, with more due to start construction in 2009. Three reactors have started construction this year: Sanmen 1 on 19 April; Fuqing 2 on 17 June; and now Fangjiashan 2 on 17 July.
