General contractor Atomenergoproekt reports that work has begun on the Novovoronezh phase II unit 2 reactor building dome.
The dome of the reactor building containment consists of the lower and upper sections. On September 3, the lower section of the dome was lifted into position at 52m elevation by a Terex-Demag crawler crane. The next stage will be the installation of the upper section of the dome. The dome structures have a total weight of over 400 tons; its bottom lower diameter is 44 meters. The dome is being assembled by specialists from Energospetsmontazh (part of Atomenergoproekt) and Trust ROSSEM.
The dome installation was preceded by on-site assembly work, not only of dome structures but also some process systems, in particular, safety system components, according to Atomenergoproekt.
After installation of the inner containment dome the main stage of installation of heavy large-size equipment of the reactor installation (reactor pressure vessel, steam generators, pressurizer) will start.
The dome is part of the double-wall containment which prevents releases into the environment and serves as protection against external natural and man-induced impacts, including earthquakes, tornadoes and aircraft crash.
Construction of Leningrad II 1 and 2 began in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Both units are 1200 MWe VVER V-491s (known as VVER AES-2006s). Two more units are planned for Leningrad II to replace the existing four units, which are due to be decommissioned between 2019 and 2026. First criticality of Leningrad II 1 is scheduled for 2015, with commercial operation in 2016. Commissioning of the second unit is tentatively set for 2016.
