Russia’s JSC ESKM (ElektroSevKavMontazh) has completed a contract for the manufacture and supply of equipment for passive heat removal systems (SPOT – Sistem Passivnovo Otvoda Tepla) for units 1-4 of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Türkiye. Another SPOT heat exchanger has now been shipped to the Akkuyu site from the Zeskmi (Zavod EelektroSevKavMontazhIndustriya) plant in Krasnodar.
Eight heat exchangers are installed in each unit – a total of 32 for the NPP. Each 48-tonne device is 98.22 metres long, 59.77 metres wide and 28.65 metres high. Materials and manufacturing processes are fully consistent with Russian and international standards.
At the Progress LLC plant, after completing acceptance testing, the SPOT control device for power Akkuyu 1 was prepared for shipment. The lead sample of the SPOT control device has undergone a full cycle of tests to confirm operability and verify all requirements for the strength and density of the material of parts under pressure from the working environment. The testing of the control device assembly was successful, in accordance with the requirements of the design documentation.
The contractual obligations of JSC ESKM include the development of design and accompanying documentation, production and shipment of all SPOT elements in full, installation supervision and commissioning supervision. To optimise the technological process and delivery times, production is distributed across all ESKM production sites.
Earlier, in June, eight units and four sets of air ducts were shipped for the upper air dampers for Akkuyu 1. Bottom air valves (16 units) were shipped in February 2024
The passive heat removal system is one of the most important safety protection systems of the new generation of NPPs. SPOT is designed for long-term heat dissipation coming from the steam generator in the event of loss by the station of all power sources, in case of off-site accidents involving complete de-energisation of the station or complete loss of feed water. The main feature of this system is its autonomy.
