The final report into the Fukui prefecture accident last August in which five people died has found that poor government oversight as well as a demise of safety culture were behind the tragedy at Kansai Electric Power’s (Kepco’s) Mihama reactor.
Kepco, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Nihon Arm were all criticised in the final government report, produced by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, which said the government had been wrong to leave inspection of steam pipes to Kepco.
Yosaku Fuji, president of Kepco will resign in June and step down as chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan in order to take responsibility for the accident. Fuji, 67, will be replaced by vice president Shosuke Mori, 64.
