A bid by environmental campaigning group Earthlife Africa to gain access to Eskom board minutes related to the proposed pebble bed modular nuclear reactor (PBMR) has been rejected by the Johannesburg High Court.
The high court action followed attempts by Earthlife to gain access to financial, commercial and technical details of the 165MWe PBMR demonstration unit that is expected to be built at Koeberg, north of Cape Town.
Earthlife has successfully challenged a number of aspects of the plans and succeeded in embarrassing Eskom by distributing papers inadvertently sent to the organisation by an Eskom lawyer. However, in a blow to the NGO, the application was dismissed with costs.
