Tokyo Electric Power Company has submitted an environmental impact study report for Fukushima units 7 and 8 to the ministry for international trade and industry (MITI). The report includes steps to be taken to avoid disturbance to goshawks (a large bird of prey which is sparcely distributed in Japan and is on the decline).

The study is an important step in the licensing process and MITI is expected to announce its conclusions and actions to be taken in one month. Fukushima units 7 and 8 are twin unit ABWRs and are part of Japan’s plan to build additional nuclear units by 2001 to help meet the country’s carbon dioxide emission targets.
