A agreement between the European Union (EU) and Russia on the trade in nuclear materials should “establish transparent, stable and predictable trade rules” to boost the “interests and viability” of their nuclear industries, said a new European Commission report.
The issue of trade in nuclear materials remains excluded from the existing Russia-EU Cooperation agreement, and this is “causing dissatisfaction to both sides,” said the paper on the four-year-old ‘energy dialogue’ between the two.
Meanwhile, the Commission has drawn up proposals that would intensify cooperation between the EU and the Ukraine over nuclear issues. Assuming EU and Ukraine ministers agree, the EU would help strengthen the country’s State Nuclear Regulatory Committee and draw up a nuclear waste strategy. The suggestions have been framed to help implement an existing EU-Ukraine Action Plan.
