According to a draft report compiled by the European Parliament’s rapporteur for Bulgaria, Geoffrey Van Orden, Bulgaria would be given approval to develop a new nuclear reactor.
The report, which will require approval from the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, will eventually form the basis of the country’s European Union accession. It includes specific references to Kozloduy, Bulgaria’s only operating nuclear power plant, which will be finally closed down in 2006. Bulgaria made the commitment to decommission Kozloduy units 3 and 4 as part of its EU accession talks. The report now acknowledges that Bulgaria made compromises which considerably influence the future energy situation on a national and regional level, and underlines the importance of developing a new nuclear plant.
