The European Commission has reported several failings of European Union (EU) member states to abide by article 37 of the Euratom treaty, telling them to consult Brussels over radioactive waste disposal plans.
Assessing 1994 to 2003, the commission said common problems had arisen over consistently applying clearance criteria for releasing solid waste from decommissioning projects and intergovernmental bilateral cooperation over potentially hazardous situations. However, it concluded national waste disposal practices had “not (been) likely to result in significant radioactive contamination.”
