Belarus is considering the possibility of building two more units at the Belarus nuclear plant, Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko told the Atomexpo-2018 Forum on 14 May. He said 90% of the population supports construction of the two-unit plant “and we think that two more blocks will follow in a short time”.
Two VVER-1200 units are being built at the Ostravets site with the assistance of Atomstroyexport, part of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom. Earlier, Semashko said Ostravets 1 is expected to be operating by the end of 2019 and Ostravets 2 by July 2020.
Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadiuk told Atomexpo that the plant will receive an operating licence before the end of 2018. The documents for the licence have already been submitted to the regulator, Gosatomnadzor and is currently under review.
Construction of Ostravets 1 began in November 2013 and of Ostravets 2 in April 2014.
