Plans to build a nuclear plant in Russia’s far east region have been revived, and work is said to have begun on a feasibility study for the project. The project appears in a strategic plan to develop nuclear power approved by the government last May.
The plan is to build a 1300MWe plant in the region, which suffers from chronic power shortages. According to Gennado Lipatnikov, head of construction, the study will focus on two sites, at Novotroitsk and Arseniev and would take three years.
If it goes ahead, construction of the plant would start in around four years. The likely cost would be around $2.5 billion, and the plant would take eight years to complete.
During the Soviet era four sites were investigated for nuclear plants in the far east region, but those projects were cancelled.
