The Indian Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has still not given the go-ahead for construction of the country’s first commercial-scale fast breeder reactor (FBR). The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) had earlier indicated that construction would commence in May.

Civil works commenced in February, marking the beginning of the second phase of the country’s nuclear programme. However, after CCEA gives its approval, a new company must be set up to implement the project. IGCAR had said that the 500MWe reactor the first of four planned would be completed by 2010, but the delay at the CCEA means this is unlikely to happen.
