The European Union and the Lithuanian government have agreed to a programme to close Ignalina 1 by the end of 2005. The deal includes a 45 million Euro grant, part of which will be used to put in place alternative energy sources. The closure of the RBMK-1000 reactor, which currently produces about 70% of Lithuania’s total electricity, is one of the conditions for membership of the EU.
