USEC has announced the manufacture of the first centrifuge rotor tube, more than two months ahead of schedule.

This is a long, fast spinning component of a centrifuge machine, constructed from a lightweight high-strength material. It was manufactured at USEC’s Centrifuge Technology Center in Tennessee, where scientists, engineers and technicians are working to finalise the centrifuge machine design that will be installed and operated at the American Centrifuge Demonstration Facility in Piketon, Ohio (see NEI September 2003, p36). Due to be operational by 2005, this facility will produce cost, schedule and performance data before USEC begins building a commercial American Centrifuge plant.
