The European Commission has called on nuclear research teams to bid for €52 million worth of European Union (EU) grants. The money will come from the EU’s sixth framework programme (FP6) on research, which ends next year. Priority areas for research grants have been outlined by Brussels, which include: geological disposal; minimising waste in nuclear energy generation; radioactive waste management infrastructures; quantification of risks associated with low and protracted exposures; medical exposures and natural sources of radiation; protection of the environment and radioecology; risk and emergency management; and safety of existing installations. Research teams have until October 11 to make applications.
