The European Commission wants to spend €2.8 billion on Euratom nuclear research from 2007 to 2013, according to its new detailed proposals for the next Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) on research.
If the European Union Council of Ministers approves this budget – and there is a significant risk of a reduction – the money will be shared by the EU Joint Research Centre and other EU nuclear researchers. Most nuclear topics will be covered, including fusion and fission energy research and radiation protection, although nuclear waste management, safety and security are likely to be priorities.
Agreement on the FP7 budget is not expected until well into 2006.
