Engineering consultancy Frazer-Nash has announced that it is providing support to an experiment as part of a project for EDF Energy to support the life extension of the UK’s advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactors (AGR).

An experiment has been designed to accelerate the rate of material degradation to simulate how the integrity of the materials within an AGR reactor will be affected over a longer period of time. The study is being carried out at the Materials Test Reactor in Petten, Holland.

Frazer-Nash’s role is to advise EDF Energy on what samples to put into the test reactor and the types of environments to expose them to. After accelerated degradation, the material samples will be measured and modeled in order to support plans to prolong the generation of power at the AGR sites across the UK.
