GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy has announced that it is working with several utility customers in Japan to deliver spent fuel pool level monitors (SFPLM), a critical tool to help operators meet comprehensive requirements of the Nuclear Regulation Authority.
Spent Fuel Pool Level Monitors enable power plant operators to safely monitor water levels in pools where used nuclear fuel is stored.
After successful acceptance testing in July, two SFPLM systems were shipped to Chugoku Electric Power Company for installation at Shimane 2 and 3 nuclear power plants in Shimane Prefecture. Installation at Shimane 2 was completed Sept. 12 while installation at Shimane 3 is scheduled for later this year.
GEH has received orders from three other utilities in Japan and also has shipped SFPLM systems to Taiwan Power Company.
In the U.S., the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has required operators to install spent fuel pool level instrumentation systems no later than December 2016. In addition to meeting or exceeding all NRC requirements, the GE Hitachi SFPLM systems fulfill the requirements put in place by Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority.
