GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) and international engineering and construction management company Fluor Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding, to jointly bid on the Teollisuuden Voima Oyj’s Olkiluoto-4 project in Finland. The Olkiluoto 4 project is one of two reactor projects that has been granted a decision in principle by Finland’s government (the other is Fennovioma’s project planned for the site of Pyhajoki)
Fluor would serve as GEH’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner if TVO selects GEH’s Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) design for the Olkiluoto-4 project. TVO is considering a number of reactor designs for the project including the Areva EPR, the Toshiba ABWR, the Korean APR1400, and the Mitsubishi APWR.
At the moment TVO is proceeding with project planning and further licensing and feasibility studies. The reactor is anticipated to start operating in 2020.
“By signing this new project development agreement, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Fluor are demonstrating our shared commitment and global supply chain readiness to TVO to deliver an ESBWR project on time and on budget,” said Danny Roderick, senior vice president of new plant projects for GEH.
In September 2011, GEH and Fluor announced a similar project development MOU for potential reactor projects in Poland.
