Germany has contributed €1m ($1m) to the modernisation of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA’s) nuclear applications laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria. The IAEA said on 7 December the funding would be used to strengthen the safety and security of essential equipment for agriculture and human health. According to the IAEA, the funds will support the construction of two new laboratory buildings, in part by covering a large portion of the costs for radiological and physical security at the new insect pest control laboratory under construction at Seibersdorf since July 2016. The IAEA said this is Germany’s fourth “pledge of support” to the modernisation of the laboratories. The modernisation project achieved its funding target of €31m in September 2016 and since then has received an additional €4m in pledges, the IAEA said.
