GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH has received an order to supply 47 CASTOR® V/52 transport and storage casks to Germany's Gundremmingen nuclear plant, operated by RWE Nuclear GmbH.

The casks, to be delivered between 2021 and 2025, will be used for the removal of all spent fuel assemblies from the two boiling water reactor units, GNS said. After loading in the reactor building, the casks will be stored on-site in an interim storage facility.

"The CASTOR® V/52 is able to reliably cover our wide range of spent fuel assemblies with one single cask solution," said Dr. Heiko Ringel, Gundremmingen NPP plant manager, adding that once the new casks have been loaded the site's two units will be free of nuclear fuel.

Gundremmingen B, a 1284MWe BWR, started operating in 1984 and was permanently retired on 31 December 2017. Under Germany's nuclear phaseout policy, Gundremmingen C, a 1288MWe BWR can continue operating until the end of 2021. All Germany reactors will close by the end of 2022.
