The World Energy Council (WEC) has set up a global greenhouse gas emissions reduction database. This can be found at www.worldenergy.org, the WEC’s website. The database currently shows greenhouse gas emissions reductions being made on a voluntary basis in over 75 countries.

The database was developed in response to a proposal put forward in 1998. The proposal was for a pilot programme to identify projects that by 2005 would reduce the world’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions by 1 billion tonnes, compared with the projected emissions baseline.

WEC secretary general Gerald Doucet said: “We want to be able to demonstrate that industry is making a major contribution to reducing emissions. Already our team has identified projects which represent aggregate reductions of over 800 million tonnes of CO2, and we are now going public with the database to allow industry and other organisations in all countries to input their reduction data directly.”
