The Sabre II fibre-optic perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS) from UK-based Remsdaq is being installed at a radioactive waste yard 40km north-east of Budapest. The Sabre II employs a continuously-monitored sensor cable that is sensitive to vibration, flexing and compression.
The Püspökszilágy waste treatment and disposal facility is a near-surface engineered plant comprising concrete vaults and steel-lined wells for disposal. The vaults are located above the water table in a unsaturated zone within quaternary rocks.
The Sabre II system performs in conjunction with Remsdaq’s fence-mounted and buried sensor cables, SabreFonic and SabreLine. Disturbance of the fibre-optic cable is detected by the processor and analysed using a microcontroller with a digital signal processor. Only when a disturbance exceeds pre-set conditions is an alarm generated. Automatic environmental compensation algorithms ensure the highest probability of detection while minimising nuisance alarms.
