The US Department of Energy (DoE) and the state of Washington have reached an agreement that will see the dismissal of a legal challenge to Hanford’s solid waste environmental impact statement.

The DoE, with Washington state as a cooperating agency, will prepare a new environmental impact assessment that will include updated, site-wide groundwater analysis. The new impact statement is to be completed by 2008.

“With this agreement, both parties will be able to shift their focus and resources away from litigation and toward partnership and our shared cleanup goals,” said US energy secretary Samuel Bodman.

The agreement brings to an end a court battle begun in 2003.
