China’s first high-temperature gas-cooled reactor was started up in Beijing on 21 December. The 10MWe experimental reactor (HTR-10) is capable of generating heat at three times the temperature of a PWR. It is unusual because it is located in a centre of a capital city. Construction of the reactor began in 1995, and involved an investment of 250 million yuan ($30 million).
