The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is hosting an International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century from 30 October to 1 November in Abu Dhabi.

The IAEA notes that a growing number of countries see nuclear power playing an essential role in addressing climate change and contributing to sustainable development. Some 30 countries already operate NPPs, and about 30 more are considering or preparing to introduce nuclear power. Currently, 60 reactors are under construction around the world. The United Arab Emirates completed the initial construction of the first unit of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in 2017.

The International Ministerial Conference “will enable the participants to engage in high-level dialogue on the role of nuclear power in meeting future energy demand, contributing to sustainable development and mitigating climate change, as well as to discuss and exchange views on the key issues related to the development and deployment of nuclear power,” the Agency says.
