The construction arm of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant order from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for its Heavy Civil Infrastructure (HCI) business to build natural draught cooling towers and a cooling water pump house for the Rawatbhata atomic power project units 7 and 8," the company said in a regulatory filing on 10 August.
The work involves constructing natural draught cooling towers, cooling water pump houses, erection and commissioning of cooling water pumps, and large diameter cement mortar lined and coated steel pipe, the main medium to transport hot water from the turbine to the cooling towers, Larsen & Toubro said in a statement. The project is scheduled to be completed in 36 months. Although the company has not revealed the exact value of the order, the contracts falls under “significant” category in the range of INR10-25 billion ($126-316m).
The Rajastan atomic power project at Rawatbhata comprises six pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs). Unit 1 began operation in 1973 with an installed capacity of 100MWe; unit 2 (200MWe) in 1981; units 3&4 (220MWe each) in 2000; unit 5 (220MWe) in 2009 and unit 6 (220MWe) in 2010. Two more PHWR units (7&8), both 700MWe, are under construction.
