Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources is seeking to accelerate the development of NPPs to 2029 from an initial target date of 2032. “The development of nuclear power plants is being accelerated to 2029-2032,” Deputy Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung noted, adding that the development of NPPs is part of the government’s efforts to support the energy transition.

Based on the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) for 2025–2060, the national power plant capacity is projected to reach 443 GWe by 2060, with 79% of the capacity derived from new and renewable energy. “To meet the energy mix target, we see the need for acceleration of the construction of nuclear power plants,” Tanjung said.

The Ministry has not yet determined the companies it will partner for NPP development and the issue is still being studied by the government. Before developing nuclear plants, the government will need to establish the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementation Organisation (NEPIO). This will play a key role in monitoring the development of NPPs, according to the Ministry’s Director General for New, Renewable Energy &Energy Conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi. The draft of a presidential decree on the establishment of a NEPIO is currently under discussion at the Ministry. Dewi said she expects the NEPIO to be established soon.

Earlier, the government said it planned to build a 250 MWe on-grid NPP facility in 2032, in line with the target set in the draft revision of the government regulation on the National Energy Policy, which has been agreed. The target requires developing human resources and choosing a clearing technology scheme, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs), or thorium reactors. the National Energy Council has mapped out 29 potential sites for NPP development.
