The member of Iran’s Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Hojjat-ol Eslam Mojtaba Zolnur, said on 20 September that Iran will continue the production of heavy water at the Arak complex, which includes a heavy water factory and a 40MW heavy water reactor. The reactor is to be redesigned and converted to a 20MW facility as part of the July 2014 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreed with the P5+1 countries (US, UK France, Russia and China plus Germany). Zolnur said that Iran had fully met its commitment under the nuclear deal and redesign of the Arak heavy water reactor was in progress. He added that a major Iranian company had assumed responsibility for managing the restructuring process instead of assigning the whole responsibility to a foreign company. China and the US are involved in the redesign, “but the management process will be done by an Iranian company, and other countries’ partner in the project”, he said.
