The UK's LLWR in CumbriaJacobs has been selected by LLW Repository Ltd (LLWR) to provide multi-disciplinary technical services at the UK’s disposal facility for low-level radioactive waste.

Jacobs is the sole service provider on the new four-year, £9 million, Repository Infrastructure Framework, which came into effect in June.

The framework includes mechanical and electrical works, installation of pumping systems, civil construction works and electronic system enhancements, LLWR said.

Jacobs said support includes “developing strategies for appropriate storage solutions, control and electronic systems enhancement and other technical services,” all underpinned by core engineering design, construction and programme and project management capabilities.

“We look forward to working with LLWR to provide long-term support and help position them as a recognised centre of excellence,” said Jacobs Critical Mission Solutions senior vice president Clive White. “Our multi-disciplinary approach will support the safe and effective management of the repository.

The framework will help Jacobs to enhance its socio-economic contribution in West Cumbria, where it recently opened a new engineering development centre, White added.

LLWR noted that the collaborative contract type provides the flexibility it needs to service demand and satisfy its many stakeholders.

“This is an exciting opportunity to combine the learning from our successful collaborative approach for delivering the decommissioning programme with the learning and experience that Jacobs can bring from their successful collaborative ventures demonstrated at other site licence companies,” said Paul Pointon chief executive officer of LLWR.

Jacobs specialises in services and protection of the environment in many fields including waste management, industry, energy and transport, and it has a multi-disciplinary site works framework with Sellafield.

LLWR's operates the Low Level Waste Repository at Drigg in Cumbria, and its mission is to manage all lower activity wastes arising from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's decommissioning programme.
