Japan In June, Japan’s upper house approved a new Energy Policy Law by 206 votes to 27. The law sets out the basic principles of energy security and stable supply, and the responsibilities of the national government and local public corporations, apparently giving greater authority to the government in establishing the energy infrastructure for economic growth. The law also seeks greater efficiency in consumption, a further move away from dependence on fossil fuels, and market liberalisation. It requires the government to report annually to the Diet on energy policy and its implementation.
