The Japan Nuclear Fuel Cycle Development Institute (JNC) has reported that it has successfully burned a test batch of MOX fuel made from 60kg of Russian weapons plutonium. The 22-month test was undertaken in Russia’s BN-600 fast reactor at Beloyarsk, using compacted granular fuel instead of conventional pellets. The work was carried out as part of international non-proliferation activities to dispose of plutonium from dismantled weapons.
