Kanupp, due to shut-down in 2002, should continue operating until 2012, according to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) officials.
“This would be an indigenous effort meeting the international standards for safety, protection and environmental considerations,” said a PAEC statement.
The 137 MWe Kanupp plant was Pakistan’s first nuclear reactor. The second, the 300 MWe Chashma two loop PWR, completed with Chinese help, is due to start operating within a few months. Located on the Indus river, it was designed by the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute and built by the China National Nuclear Corp.
