Karachi 3, which was connected to the grid in March, is the world's fourth 1100MWe Hualong One reactor and the second unit to be built outside China. Karachi 2, which started construction in August 2015, entered commercial operation in May 2021. Both units were contracted to CNNC's China Zhongyuan Engineering Corporation (CZEC).

CNNC said the project of Karachi 2&3 “is an important result of the nuclear cooperation between China and Pakistan”. Not only did the project fill the electricity gap in Karachi, but it has also driven the development of the local economy and related industries in Pakistan, CNNC noted. The project provided tens of thousands of jobs to local people during its peak construction period.
