Kazakhstan has signed a deal with Japanese fuel company Nuclear Fuel Industries Ltd. (NFI) to produce uranium dioxide powder for the Japanese nuclear fuel market.
The agreement is subject to ratification of the Japanese-Kazakhstan intergovernmental cooperation agreement that was signed in March 2010.
The uranium dioxide power will be produced at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant, an enterprise of Kazatomprom. NFI has certified the powder as suitable for production of nuclear fuel for Japanese nuclear power plants.
NFI fabricates fuel for both boiling-water reactors (BWRs) and pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). Westinghouse Electric group acquired a majority interest in NFI in May, 2009.
